Preparing chapati is a simple process and requires just a few ingredients. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making soft and delicious chapatis:
Ingredients:
Whole wheat flour (atta) - 2 cups
Water - about 3/4 cup (adjust as needed)
Salt - 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
Ghee or oil - for brushing (optional)
Instructions:
Make the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt (if using).
Gradually add water, little by little, and knead the flour into a soft dough. The amount of water can vary, so add it slowly.
Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it's smooth and pliable. If the dough is sticky, you can sprinkle a little more flour.
Once kneaded, cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 30 minutes. This helps in gluten formation, making the chapatis softer.
Divide the Dough:
After resting, knead the dough briefly again and divide it into equal-sized balls, about the size of a golf ball.
Roll the Chapati:
Take one dough ball and flatten it slightly between your palms.
Dust it lightly with flour to prevent sticking, then place it on a rolling surface.
Using a rolling pin, roll it out evenly into a thin circle (about 6-8 inches in diameter). Try to keep the thickness uniform.
Cook the Chapati:
Heat a tawa or a flat skillet over medium-high heat until it’s hot.
Place the rolled-out chapati on the hot tawa. Cook for about 30 seconds, or until you see bubbles forming on the surface.
Flip the chapati using tongs and cook the other side for another 30 seconds. You may gently press down with a spatula to help it cook evenly.
To puff the chapati, you can place it directly over an open flame for a few seconds (if using a gas stove) or press gently with a spatula on the tawa until it puffs up.
Remove from heat and place it in a container lined with a clean cloth to keep it warm and soft. Optionally, brush with ghee or oil.
Serve:
Repeat the rolling and cooking process with the remaining dough balls.
Serve chapatis warm with your favorite curries, vegetables, or dips.
Enjoy your homemade chapatis!
